San Fernando’s newest Carnival mas band, Southern Mas Associates, is set to make an impact on this year’s celebrations with its presentation, Sundance Spectacle. Led by designers Roger Ramkissoon and Kerwin Sookram, the band is no stranger to the arts, as it is a break-off from the big San Fernando band Lionel Jagessar and Associates. On Saturday the band officially launched its 2012 presentation at Prive Night Club, La Romaine, and already it has managed to gather a large number of supporters. Sundance Spectacle adheres to a traditional Indian theme and provides all the feathery excitement needed for Carnival Tuesday. Ramkissoon explained that plain Indians were intensely spiritual people, in which their most spectacular aspect of culture was the Sun Dance.

He explained that the Sun Dance was primarily a supplication and sacrifice for supernatural aid and spiritual power. Southern Mas Associates, he said, was seeking to recapture the atmosphere and emotions with its debut presentation. The band will present six exciting sections, which includes, Pawnee Sun Dancers, Arapaho Dancers, Cheyenne Bustle Dancers, Shoshone Sun Worshippers, Santee Dakota Buffalo Dancers and Dignitaries and Commoners. All costumes were handmade and decorated with a wide variety of glitter, braids, and rhinestones, edging frills, foils, feathers, suede and leatherette. Music on the road will be provided by DJ Richards and D Fire Crew.
